「倫敦橋要塌了，要塌了，要塌了……」一首充滿悲劇色彩的民謠唱說著倫敦橋的滄桑歷史。
倫敦橋是泰晤士河上資格最老的橋，公元965年建成。它原是一座木橋，兩個世紀後改為石橋，是當年溝通泰晤士河南北兩岸的唯一通道。歲月滄桑，倫敦橋難逃蒼老的命運，逐漸顯露了頹敗的跡象，對日益繁重的交通，已不勝重荷，於是，便流傳了這樣一首充滿悲劇色彩的民謠。但老謀深算的英國人，並沒有眼睜睜地看著倫敦橋倒塌，而是把它變為無價寶。他們大力宣傳倫敦橋的歷史華彩，把廢橋作為古董，賣給了美國亞利桑那州的哈瓦蘇湖城地產商。商人把古橋的構件逐一編號拆卸，用巨輪運至美國，再按原樣在哈瓦蘇湖上把它重新砌築起來，周圍點綴以英式房舍，成為一個別開生面的旅遊點——「小倫敦」。美國地產商讓英國人賺了錢，自己也並不吃虧，由於「古董橋」的吸引，遊客不絕，該城的地產隨之而大大升值，全城百姓都在不同程度上受惠於「古董橋」而富裕起來。
倫敦橋就這樣上演了一出「悲喜劇」。
